If A Tree Falls In The Forrest And No One Is Reading Your Blog, Did You Write It?

social media marketing, blogging for small business, how to start blogging, do I build a social media platform before I start blogging,

Many small businesses know they should blog, and if you are one of those people, you have probably wrestled with the question,  “if I don’t have followers to my blog, am I just wasting my time?”  Should you spend the time blogging or wait until you build a following?  Well, we have all heard the question, “If a tree falls in the forrest and no one is there to Instagram it, did the tree really fall?” or “What comes first the chicken or the blog?”  “If you blog it, will they come?” I could keep going, but here are 3 steps to bring you comfort and get you blogging:

  1. Just start writing.

Whether that tree falls today or last year, a person walking through the forrest tomorrow with their smart phone will find the tree and snap a photo to share with the world.  The key is, your blog is a collection of your expertise and it will live on day after day, year after year.  I have a post from 2010 that still gets several visitors and questions on it each week.  You can use social media to send people to blog posts that were written back to the start of the internet!  So quit letting your keyboard gather moss and get started.

  2. Build your social community.

Now that you have that first tree down, get that Twitter account UP!  Use Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+ and any other social platform you may be using to share your expertise and connect with people.  Share links to your blog post with a short blurb that will catch the attention of those you seek to connect with.  Remember, not everyone will LOVE you and your blog (I know…that’s harsh!) but everyone is likable to someone, and your community will come.  You will get better and better at blogging and sharing great content with your social media audience, the longer you do it.

  3. Mix the medium.

Your blog doesn’t always have to be in writing.  Perhaps some days you simply share a photo, or turn your video cameral on and share a tip or an answer to a question you get all the time, in a 2 minute video.  Keep it interesting for your blog audience as well as yourself.

So don’t worry about people not seeing a post you write today.  Get started, and before you know it, there will be a steady stream of people walking on that forrest path and no one will miss that falling tree!
